Supporting local children & families, all year long

Cops, Kids & Toys brings together law enforcement, volunteers, and local supporters to make a meaningful difference for children and families throughout our community.

Cops, Kids & Toys began in the early 1980s when two Ithaca City Police officers decided to help out a few children. Today, volunteers come from every law enforcement agency in Tompkins County, the Tompkins County Probation Department, numerous local businesses, and many local citizens. As the number of families in need continues to grow, supporters of Cops, Kids & Toys have risen to the challenge. No gift is too small to put a smile on a child's face!

Today, Cops, Kids & Toys collects, purchases, and distributes holiday toys and gifts to families and children in need throughout Tompkins County.

"I have been volunteering for Cops, Kids, and Toys for many years due to my husband’s participation. Over the last few years, I have become more involved because I realized how much of a benefit this group is to the families and kids in the Tompkins County area. Not only that but I feel like I am helping those kids have a great holiday. The people that work with CKT are all volunteers and are wonderful, kindhearted and amazing people.

We have many fundraising opportunities throughout the year that are beneficial to other members of the community. For example, the Dump & Run provides awesome clothing, bedding, home goods for students and other community members. This fundraiser requires a lot of volunteers and is a fun way to help the community.

One of the things I love about CKT is that they promote reading to the kids by getting donations of books from the Friends of the Library and providing each child with a book as a gift. I have a love of reading and feel that if only one child gets the love of reading from receiving a book at Christmas that it a wonderful thing."

On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Cops, Kids & Toys was proud to present a check to the Family Reading Partnership in support its important work and to assist with some unforeseen expenses as it continues to serve local children and families. Since 1997, Family Reading Partnership has helped Tompkins County families with young children experience the joy of books and read-aloud time as an everyday part of life. Family Reading Partnership provides programs and materials that encourage parents and caregivers to engage with infants and young children through reading, play, songs, and conversation, all as building blocks for literacy. It works to create a culture of literacy in the community by weaving books and reading encouragement into the networks and services that already reach local families. Their programs are designed especially for families with infants and young children in Tompkins County, helping children connect with books early and often. Their impact is rooted in a simple but powerful idea. When children grow up with books as part of everyday life, families are strengthened and young learners are better prepared to thrive. Family Reading Partnership describes its work as creating a culture of literacy, one book, one family, and one community at a time. Organizations like Family Reading Partnership help make Tompkins County a stronger, more connected community for children. We encourage our supporters to learn more about their work and consider making a donation to help them continue serving local families.
